It was very clear that she watched the direct-to-DVD Mulan 2 movie. I also have to give the author major props for doing her homework. She did a great job incorporating the Chinese underworld and mythology into the story.
You can tell that the author knew the culture so well. I think #OwnVoices literature is so important. This is now officially my favorite book in the Twisted Tales series, out of the ones I have read thus far. I loved the dark atmosphere of the entire tale. The obstacles she faced were genuinely terrifying. Following Mulan into Diyu had a very Alice in Wonderland fever dream quality to it. Although a bit tougher on Mulan than Mushu, I still adored his character. Like Mushu in the original version of Mulan, ShiShi added a great deal of humor to the story. Accompanying her into Diyu is Shang's lion guardian, ShiShi. If she fails, however, she will remained trapped in the Underworld as Yama's prisoner forever. King Yama, ruler of the Underworld, has presented Mulan with a deal, the terms of which she has accepted.īasically, if she can navigate through the different levels of Diyu by sunset, facing numerous obstacles along the way, Shang will be revived and she will be released.
